Why free testosterone is the relevant measure

Most circulating testosterone is bound, principally to sex hormone binding globulin and albumin. Only the unbound fraction, typically 1 to 3% of the total, is biologically available to tissue.

This means a man can have a total testosterone figure within range while the free fraction sits low, because SHBG is elevated. SHBG rises with age, with thyroid hormone and with certain medications. An intervention that lowers SHBG raises free testosterone without changing total production.

That is the specific role boron appears to play, and it explains why the effect shows up quickly: it does not require any change in synthesis.

The evidence

In a study of healthy male volunteers, 10mg of boron daily for one week produced a significant increase in free testosterone and a decrease in SHBG, alongside reductions in inflammatory markers including interleukin-6 and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein.1

Earlier work examining boron supplementation in bodybuilders and in postmenopausal women showed effects on steroid hormone metabolism, though with more variable results.2 The studies are small and the field is not large, which is why we describe the evidence as moderate rather than strong.

Dosing and safety

The studied range is 6 to 10mg daily. Dietary intake from fruit, vegetables and nuts typically provides 1 to 2mg, so supplementation is meaningfully additive.

The tolerable upper intake level for adults is 20mg per day. Supplemental doses in this range have a good safety record, but boron is not a case where more is better: the effect on SHBG appears at 10mg and there is no evidence of additional benefit above it.

What to look for

Boron is inexpensive, which means its presence at a proper dose is a reasonable signal that a formulation was designed rather than assembled from marketing-friendly names. Its absence from a formula claiming to address free testosterone is a notable gap.

Bottom line

Boron will not transform anyone's hormonal profile on its own. It has a specific, replicated and mechanistically coherent effect on the free fraction, at a dose that costs almost nothing to include properly. In our comparative review, boron dosing was one of the more revealing details about how carefully each formula had been put together.
